Chile: Protests possible nationwide through March 29
Disruptive protests, including clashes and transport disruptions, possible across Chile through March 29. Avoid protests as a precaution.
Event
Protests are possible across Chile through March 29 as the nation marks Day of the Young Combatant, an unofficial observance that commemorates the deaths of students killed by the former dictatorship. The largest demonstration will likely be the march that traditionally takes place in the Villa Francia neighborhood of Santiago's Estacion Central borough; protests could extend to other areas of the city, including Avenida Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins and Plaza Italia. Demonstrators will probably gather in the afternoon and early evening of March 29.
Increased security and localized transport and business disruptions are likely near any large gatherings of people that may materialize. In Santiago, metropolitan authorities plan to deploy about 3,000 additional police officers to locations that have historically been flashpoints during the annual observance - specifically, Avenida Grecia in the Penalolen borough, La Pincoya in the Huechuraba borough, and Villa Francia. Protesters may engage in clashes with police and acts of vandalism; during past demonstrations during Day of the Young Combatant, protesters have clashed with police, vandalized businesses, set vehicles on fire, and blocked roads and railroad tracks.
Advice
Avoid all protests as a standard security precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a nongovernmental building. Allow additional time to reach destinations in major cities; consider modifying travel plans to avoid travel after dark March 29.
