Mali: Armed clashes in Gao Region March 8-10 leave dozens dead

Armed clashes in Gao Region, Mali, March 8-10 left dozens of combatants and civilians dead.

Informational

Event

The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) issued a statement March 11, noting that clashes between rival armed groups in the Tamalat area, Gao Region, during the week of March 7 had resulted in many casualties. MINUSMA also indicated that it was increasing patrols in the area. Media reports suggest that dozens of combatants and civilians were killed in clashes March 8-10 near Tamalat and Inchinanane. The fighting reportedly involved suspect Islamist militants and fighters from the Movement for the Salvation of Azawad (MAS).

Heightened security is almost certain in the area in the coming days. Attacks against security forces and civilians will almost certainly persist for the foreseeable future.

Context

Insecurity is prevalent across much of Mali. Islamist militants or affiliated groups pose a significant threat. Despite continued security operations, armed groups continue to demonstrate a capability to attack civilians and security forces. The security situation is further undermined by local rivalries, sporadic communal violence, and banditry. The tri-border area between Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso is particularly insecure, with mass-casualty attacks perpetrated by suspected Islamist militants reported regularly.

Advice

Avoid travel at night and consider travel in convoy outside of Gao in Gao Region. Liaise with trusted sources on the status of routes before departure. Maintain regular contact with your diplomatic representation.
