Chile: Protests possible in Bio-Bio and La Araucania regions April 4
Protests possible in Bio-Bio and La Araucania regions, Chile, April 4 following ruling in controversial court case. Avoid all protests.
Event
Protests are possible in the regions of Bio-Bio and La Araucania April 4 following a Supreme Court decision expected to be handed down in the appeals case of Mapuche indigenous activists who were convicted of homicide. Protesters will likely block roads throughout the area; however, in Lebu, Bio-Bio Region, activists have occupied the municipal government building. Transport and business disruptions are likely during any demonstrations that may materialize. Police will almost certainly deploy to keep order during such protests; violence cannot be ruled out, especially if authorities attempt to forcibly disperse demonstrators.
Advice
Avoid all protests as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a non-governmental building. Do not attempt to drive through protester roadblocks; wait for police to dismantle them instead. Allow extra time to reach destinations in affected areas. Reconfirm business appointments.
