Chile: Truck drivers to protest nationwide April 25-26

Truck drivers in Chile to protest nationwide April 25-26; disruptions reported on Ruta 5 Sur connecting southern cities to Santiago.

Warning

Event

Truck drivers have called for protests across Chile April 25-26 to denounce the deterioration of security following violent incidents affecting drivers in recent months. As of early April 25, truck drivers have already partially blocked certain routes around Santiago, including Ruta 5 Sur near Paine. Participants may block other routes on April 25. However, several of the country's main unions have already stated that they will not support protests April 25, indicating that a significant number of truck drivers are unlikely to join the protests.

The Spokespersons for Drivers and Small Truck Owners of Chile (Voceros de Conductores y Pequenos Duenos de Camiones de Chile) group has called for a nationwide demonstration from 06:00 April 26. The union has called for nationwide blockades April 26 without confirming specific protest locations. However, if the government reaches out to the union to negotiate, the strike and protest may be averted.

Police will likely deploy to monitor all large gatherings. Clashes between police and protesters are possible. Road freight and business disruptions are likely near all major protests.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Leave the area at the first sign of confrontations. Use alternative routes to avoid rally venues; allow additional time to reach destinations.
