Unidentified assailants attacked local communities in the Yendi area of Northern Region the afternoon of April 13. The incident left at least eight residents dead; the attackers also burned properties and stole livestock. No group has claimed responsibility as yet.

Security forces have been deployed in the affected area and are likely to remain there in the coming days. Should further violence occur, officials may enact additional security measures such as curfews.

Context

The attack may have been carried out as reprisal following the alleged death of a young man. Select areas surrounding Yendi in the Northern Region, including Bimbilla, Kpatinga, and Saboba, are currently under curfew due to insecurity and violence linked to longstanding grievances and communal disputes; some of the curfews have been in effect for years.
