Puerto Rico: Power outages reported in multiple areas of Puerto Rico late April 6

Over 193,000 customers without power in Puerto Rico as of late April 6. Transport and commercial disruptions possible.

Warning

Event

Power outages are ongoing in multiple municipalities across Puerto Rico late April 6 following a malfunction at a switchyard in Costa Sur. At least 193,000 customers are without electricity in Aguadilla, Bayamon, Dorado, Fajardo, Guaynabo, Humacao, Mayaguez, Moca, Ponce, San Juan, and Toa Baja. Other areas are also likely being impacted by the outages. According to the Electric Power Authority (AEE), it will take at least 12 hours for service to be restored.

Commercial and transport disruptions are possible. Businesses without backup generators may have to suspend operations. Traffic lights may not function, resulting in traffic disruptions, and public transport that relies on power may be affected. Lingering disruptions are possible after regular supply resumes.

Advice

Charge all communication and portable electronic devices when possible. Unplug electronic equipment that is not connected to surge protectors. Exercise caution when driving in areas affected by power outages. Ensure that generators are functional if operating in affected areas. Confirm business appointments. Verify that security systems are working, including after power resumes. Follow all security personnel instructions.
