Context

Before the May 5 incident in Elad, armed attacks carried out by Palestinians and Arab Israelis had killed 15 people in Israel and the West Bank since March 22. In response, Israeli forces have carried out frequent security raids in Palestinian towns in the West Bank, prompting clashes, some of which have resulted in Palestinian deaths. Israeli security forces have killed at least 40 Palestinians since January amid prevailing heightened tensions.
