Japan: Activists plan to protest at Chinese consulates and embassies in Japan May 8

Activists plan to protest at Chinese consulates and embassies in Japan 10:30 May 8. Tight security measures, localized disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

Activists from the South Mongolia Congress have called for protests in several cities in Japan May 8 to mark the tenth death anniversary of a Mongol herder who died during demonstrations in China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region. Participants plan to gather at Chinese consulates and embassies in Fukuoka, Hokkaido, Nagoya, Niigata, Osaka, and Tokyo from 10:30. Organizers have also called for a protest march at Hanakawado Park in Tokyo from 13:30. Dozens of people may take part in the action.

Heightened security measures are likely at gathering sites and along protest march routes May 8. While gatherings that materialize are likely to pass off peacefully, minor skirmishes between protesters and police are possible. Localized ground transport disruptions appear unlikely but may occur if protesters occupy nearby roads.

Advice

Exercise caution near protest sites and along march routes. Plan for possible ground transport disruptions in the affected area. Seek updated information on roads in the area and allow additional time to reach nearby destinations.
