Moldova: Protests possible in the coming weeks due to former president's arrest in Chisinau as of May 26

PSRM may hold further protests in Chisinau in the coming weeks following the former president's arrest, as of May 26.

Informational

Event

The opposition Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM) and others may hold further protests in Chisinau in the coming weeks following the May 25 arrest of former President Igor Dodon. The PSRM demonstrated in central Chisinau May 25, and outside the Supreme Court on Mitropolit Gavriil Banulescu-Bodoni street the morning of May 26. Dogon appeared at the Ciocana district court early May 26; judges will decide whether he will be detained for 30 days. Protests are likely to occur at courthouses and government offices across the city. Attendance at demonstrations may reach the low hundreds.

Additional police will deploy to monitor any demonstrations that occur. Protests and related security measures, including possible road closures and movement restrictions, will likely prompt localized transport disruptions in the area. Demonstrations are likely to proceed peacefully, though isolated clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, particularly if activists attempt to breach any security cordons.

Advice

Avoid any protests as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security forces and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Check for disruptions and allow extra time for travel in the affected area in the coming weeks.
