Emergency crews responding to wildfires in Setif Province, Algeria, as of June 28. Casualties reported.

Warning

Event

Emergency crews are responding to wildfires in Harbil Commune of Setif Province as of June 28. Two fires broke out in the Harbil Forest June 26 and spread rapidly due to high temperatures and strong winds. The fires have reached several villages to the northeast of Harbil, including Ras El Faid and Shrigat. As of June 27, authorities have reported at least three fatalities and 18 injuries associated with the fire. The casualties include members of the armed forces who have been deployed to extinguish the blaze alongside civil protection teams from Harbil and surrounding areas. The fires have burned at least 150 hectares (371 acres) of forest; however, officials stated that they have been largely brought under control as of June 27.

Emergency responders may close roads in affected areas at short notice depending on evolving wildfire conditions and operational needs. Smoke from the fire could cause poor air quality. Authorities may issue additional mandatory evacuation orders at short notice. The fire could also lead to power supply disruptions.

Advice

Heed any evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will likely cause increased congestion and delays. Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in a "go-bag" that can be easily accessed. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged power outages.
