Mali: Attacks leave 132 civilians dead in Bankass Cercle, Mopti Region, June 18-19

Event

Authorities announced June 20 that Al-Qaeda-linked Katiba Macina militants attacked Diallassagou, Dianweli, and Deguessagou villages in Bankass Cercle, Mopti Region, overnight June 18-19. The attacks left at least 132 civilians killed. Additional localities may have been targeted, while reports also suggest that the attackers kidnapped an unspecified number of people. The attacks may have been carried out as reprisal after locals reportedly provided intelligence to security forces, though this cannot be confirmed.

Further such attacks remain likely in the short term.

Context

The security dynamic amid the French/European security force withdrawal may provide more space for regional militants to conduct attacks, hurting the already poor security environment.
