US Embassy in Mali issues terrorism warning for Bamako mid-June. Exercise heightened caution.

Warning

Event

The US Embassy in Mali issued a security alert June 16 advising that a terror attack targeting government offices, Modibo Keita International Airport (BKO), and locations frequented by Westerners, including diplomatic facilities, hotels, and restaurants, is possible in Bamako. The embassy further announced a 23:00-05:00 curfew for embassy staff. It is unclear how long the warning is in force.

Increased security measures, including checkpoints, night patrols, as well as random vehicle searches, are possible in Bamako. Localized transport disruptions could occur in areas with a heavy security presence.

Exercise heightened vigilance if operating in Bamako, particularly in public places frequented by foreign nationals. Consider avoiding such places in the coming days. Heed the instructions of local authorities; remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by security personnel. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations while operating in the country.
