China: Increased security likely during China International Consumer Products Expo in Haikou July 26-30

China to host international consumer expo in Haikou, Hainan Province, July 26-30. Increased security, transport disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

The city of Haikou will host the second China International Consumer Products Expo at the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center July 26-30. The purpose of the expo is to boost Hainan Province’s image as an international consumer goods hub and free trade port. Over 40,000 buyers and 1,300 companies from 58 countries and regions are projected to participate in the event.

Increased security will be in place in Haikou for the duration of the expo, prompting localized transport and possible business disruptions. Security personnel will implement temporary road closures and traffic control measures 06:00-21:00 July 26-30. Authorities will close sections of Binhai Avenue; police will redirect traffic from Changxi, Changyuan, Changxiang, Changhuan, Changbin, and Zhenhai roads, as well as Yuehai Avenue and the Changtong intersection. Police have banned trucks carrying hazardous materials, as well as motor vehicles weighing over 5 tons from using parts of the affected roads. Special detour instructions will be in place for motorists who do not possess official event passes. Transport operators will adjust bus services near the convention center. Traffic congestion is possible on alternative roads.

Security personnel will likely establish roadblocks and checkpoints near the expo venue. Tight security is also likely as a precaution near hotels hosting international entrepreneurs and other attendees, as well as at transport hubs in the city. Authorities may conduct random security checks on passengers at surrounding public transportation stops. Similar measures are possible at Haikou Meilan International Aiport (HAK); increased scrutiny could cause delays in clearing immigration and customs at HAK.

Advice

Confirm business appointments. Plan accordingly for heightened security, including traffic detours and checkpoints, particularly near Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center and transport hubs. Carry proper travel and identification documents at all times. Remain polite and nonconfrontational if questioned by security personnel. Do not take photographs or video of security personnel or any protests, as officials may confiscate or destroy equipment.
