Madagascar: Further opposition-led protests possible after police disperse protesters in Antananarivo July 23
Further opposition-led protests possible after police disperse protesters in Antananarivo, Madagascar, July 23. Avoid all demonstrations.
Event
Further protests by activists from the opposition Rassemblement des Opposants a Madagascar pour la Democratie (RMDM) are possible in Antananarivo after police dispersed protesters July 23. According to reports, RMDM activists gathered at a building in the central Behoririka area belonging to former president, Marc Ravalomanana, to denounce cost of living increases. However, police dispersed them, stating the activists did not have permission to gather there, and should demonstrate instead at Magro Tanjombato, on the outskirts of the city.
Should RMDM attempt to hold any further unsanctioned gatherings in central Antananarivo, security personnel will almost certainly deploy, and may move forcefully to disperse demonstrators; violence is therefore possible. Additionally, police deployments and protests will likely result in ground travel and business operation disruptions.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations. Allow additional time to reach destinations near any protest venues. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately, and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Reconfirm all public transportation services and business appointments.
