Event
Militants attacked a FORSAT (antiterrorist special force) military camp in Kolokani, Koulikoro Region, at around 05:00 July 21. Heavy gunfire, explosions, and associated infrastructure damages have been reported. Casualties are likely. Reports suggest that militants temporarily took control of the city, but this has yet to be confirmed. Kolokani is located about 110 km (69 miles) north of Bamako.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack; however, militants affiliated Al-Qaeda and Islamic State-linked groups have carried out several other attacks around Bamako and may have carried out the assault. A similar attack against a security post in Zantiguila, Koulikoro Region, located approximately 60 km (37 miles) east of Bamako, occurred overnight July 14-15. The attack left at least six people dead, and two others injured. No group claimed responsibility.
Authorities will likely maintain an elevated security posture in the area over the coming days and weeks. Officials could implement restrictive movement measures. Further similar attacks remain possible in the near term.
