Zimbabwe: Teachers threaten strike action, July 21; public sector may also strike

Teachers threaten strike action in Zimbabwe as of July 21; the public sector may also strike in the coming days.

Informational

Event

The Educators Union of Zimbabwe has threatened to embark on a strike from July 21. Teachers are demanding increased salaries in response to spiraling costs of living. In addition, unions representing public sector workers issued a 14-day strike notice in early July, which expires July 21. It remains possible that public sector workers could also embark on a strike over similar concerns in the coming days.

Protests by striking workers remain possible. These could occur near government buildings, city centers, and along major road routes. Police will almost certainly deploy to any protest site and will likely disperse gatherings if demonstrators gather without a permit or refuse police orders to disperse. Localized ground travel delays are likely near all protests. Depending on the impacted sector, disruptions to public service operations, education facilities, and hospitals, are possible.

Advice

Reconfirm appointments at all public sector offices and hospitals through July. Monitor developments closely with a trusted contact. Avoid all demonstrations. Heed the instructions of officials.
