Officials imposing tighter COVID-19 curbs in parts of Tibet Autonomous Region, China, as of Aug. 10. Disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Authorities are implementing tighter curbs in several cities across Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) as of Aug. 10 due to COVID-19 activity. Mass testing is underway in Lhasa and Shigatse cities; as well as Burang, Gar, and Zanda counties in Ngari Prefecture. Lockdown measures are in place in high- and medium-risk areas of Lhasa. Individuals must hold a negative nucleic acid test result taken within 48 hours to move around in low-risk areas of the city. Nonessential and entertainment venues must close, while large social gatherings are prohibited. World heritage sites like Norbulingka, Potala Palace, and Tibet Museum in Lhasa are temporarily closed. Similar stay-home measures and movement controls are in place in all areas of Shigatse through at least Aug. 11.

The tightest curbs continue in designated high- and medium-risk locations. As of Aug. 10, officials have classified 1 site as high risk and 22 places as medium risk in TAR. Residents in high-risk areas must stay at home, while people living in medium-risk locations must limit movement to the immediate area. Authorities will restrict travel to and from the affected communities and enforce checkpoints in these areas to ensure compliance with movement restrictions. Officials typically extend measures until one week after the latest date of newly confirmed community cases, and will likely conduct several rounds of testing in these locations before easing restrictions.

Additional measures are likely if there are new COVID-19 cases. Strict controls, such as stay-at-home orders, may occur in other areas of TAR in the coming days. Other provincial and municipal governments may require testing and/or quarantine for travelers from the affected areas of TAR.

Advice

Strictly heed the instructions of authorities. Avoid all nonessential operations in areas impacted by travel controls. Confirm appointments. Remain cooperative if approached and questioned by law enforcement officers.
