Warning

Event

Officials in Sichuan Province are implementing tighter curbs in Chengdu as of Aug. 31 due to COVID-19 concerns. Mass testing of residents is underway. Cultural and entertainment venues must close and food establishments may only offer takeaway services. Residents in high-risk areas must stay at home, while people living in medium-risk locations must limit movement to the immediate area. Individuals must present a negative nucleic acid test result taken within 24 or 48 hours to enter public transport and venues. The government requires travelers arriving and departing Chengdu to present a negative nucleic acid test result taken within 24 hours. Local authorities have placed specific controls in some areas, including Chenghua, Gaoxin, Jinjiang, Jinniu, Qingyang, and Wuhou districts. Additionally, lockdown measures are also ongoing in designated high-risk areas of Luzhou City. Officials will likely carry out several rounds of testing in these locations before easing restrictions.

Officials could extend the measures or impose tighter restrictions in Chengdu if there are new COVID-19 cases. Strict controls, such as stay-at-home orders and closure of nonessential businesses, are possible. The government may impose gathering, business, and travel restrictions in other parts of Sichuan Province as a precaution if new cases emerge. Tighter curbs could also lead to panic buying as residents stock up on supplies to prepare for a possible lockdown.

Advice

Strictly heed the instructions of authorities. Avoid all nonessential operations in areas impacted by travel controls. Confirm appointments. Remain cooperative if approached and questioned by law enforcement officers.
