Warning

Event

Emergency services are continuing their response to an uncontrolled fire at Cuba's main oil terminal, the Matanzas Supertankers Base, as of Aug. 8. The fire started Aug. 5 after lightning struck the facility. According to officials, the blaze has killed at least one person and injured over 120 others, with 16 people reported missing. Authorities confirmed Aug. 8 that three of the eight fuel tanks at the terminal had exploded. Emergency crews are taking measures to prevent the remaining tanks from exploding while attempting to contain oil spills.

Authorities evacuated over 1,000 civilians from the area as a precaution. The government is also advising residents in Matanzas to close their doors and windows and to wear facemasks due to the heavy smoke that continues to emanate from the site. Officials will likely close roads leading to the scene until the blaze is extinguished. Further evacuations are possible.

Matanzas is 84 km (52 miles) east of Havana.

Advice

Heed all evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will cause increased congestion and delays. Collect essential items, including identification and any important legal and travel documents, in an easily accessible "go-bag."

Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Individuals with chronic respiratory illnesses may be more susceptible to the negative effects of smoke inhalation. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water.
