Informational

Event

Activists plan to demonstrate in downtown San Juan Aug. 25. The purpose of the action is to demand the cancellation of an awarded contract to LUMA Energy, the company in charge of the transmission and distribution of electricity throughout the commonwealth. Participants will gather from 17:00 in front of La Fortaleza (the governor's residence).

While the action should remain largely peaceful, an increased security presence is possible near the gathering. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out, especially if security forces attempt to forcibly disperse crowds. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely.

Advice

Avoid the protest as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a safe nongovernmental building. Do not attempt to drive through protester-erected roadblocks; wait for the police to dismantle them before proceeding. Allow additional time to reach destinations near the protest location. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
