Thousands of people are likely to gather, including prominent traditional leaders, politicians, and diplomats.

Official and private security personnel are likely to deploy extensively ahead of and during the event. Checkpoints and patrols are likely. There are several ongoing disputes regarding the status of Misuzulu as the next king. There is a potential for low-level confrontations during and after the coronation event.

Context

The Zulu king is the ceremonial head of South Africa's largest ethnic group; Zulus comprise approximately 20 percent of the country's population. While holding no executive power, the king holds significant influence, particularly in KZN. He also receives significant funding from the state and is chairman of the Ingonyama Trust, which owns and manages approximately 30 percent of land in KZN. King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu died in March 2021. His death sparked significant disputes and court challenges regarding his eventual successor.
