South Korea: Unionized bus drivers launch indefinite strike across Gyeonggi Province as of Sept. 30

Unionized bus company employees begin indefinite strike across Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, Sept. 30.

Warning

Event

Bus drivers affiliated with the Gyeonggi Bus Labor Union Council launched an indefinite strike across Gyeonggi Province on Sept. 30 after talks with management over increased wages and better working conditions broke down. The work stoppage will likely disrupt over 90 percent of bus services in the province. Inter-city bus services between Seoul and Gyeonggi may also be severely impacted.

Authorities plan to dispatch 383 chartered buses linking each key region and 1,377 city and village buses to mitigate potential disruptions. Officials will also extend the availability of taxis to accommodate commuters and provide updates through the Gyeonggi Bus Information System. Higher demand for alternative transport is likely; increased traffic congestion is also possible as commuters who normally ride public transportation resort to using their personal vehicles.

Although labor leaders have announced no specific plans for such gatherings, striking workers could stage protests as part of their industrial action. Demonstrations and pickets are particularly likely near bus stations, government buildings, and transportation hubs.

Advice

Confirm all travel arrangements if operating in and near Gyeonggi Province during the strike period. Plan accordingly for bus service delays. Avoid any demonstrations that may materialize.
