South Korea: Unionized financial workers to strike nationwide Sept. 16

Unionized financial workers to strike across South Korea Sept. 16. Protests planned, localized disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

Members of the National Financial Industry Labor Union have launched a nationwide strike Sept. 16 to demand increased wages and better working conditions. Employees of various commercial and state-run banks, including Korea Development Bank, are participating in the action. The strike could cause disruptions to financial services for the affected banks, but significant service delays are unlikely.

Unionized workers are demonstrating at Saejong-daero in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, the morning of Sept. 16. Participants intend to march to the Samgak area in Yongsan District. Organizers claim that up to 10,000 workers will attend the demonstration. Additional rallies by finance workers are possible at bank offices, government buildings, and public squares nationwide.

Authorities will likely increase security at any gathering site and its surrounding areas Sept. 16. Roadblocks are possible if significant demonstrations occur. Localized traffic congestion is likely near protest sites and in downtown Seoul, particularly along Sejong-daero and Hangang-daero. While violence is unlikely, clashes between protesters and police remain possible.

Advice

Avoid the demonstration as a security precaution. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Monitor trusted local media for updates on protest locations as organizers may not announce them in advance. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near events. Confirm business appointments and transport schedules in advance.
