Ghana: Unions representing university staff on indefinite nationwide strike as of Oct. 18 /update 1

Unions representing university personnel strike indefinitely across Ghana as of Oct. 18. Related protests are possible.

Informational

Event

Four unions representing teachers and other personnel at public universities are on an indefinite nationwide strike as of Oct. 18. The decision follows a meeting with the government Oct. 14 in which officials did not meet the union’s demands. Union leaders are demanding the government address issues such as vehicle maintenance and off-campus allowances. The strike will likely continue until officials meet select demands.

Related protests are possible in the vicinity of public universities and government buildings, particularly in urban centers such as Accra. Heightened security and localized traffic disruptions are likely near any protests that materialize. Clashes may also occur if protesters are overly disruptive or are forcibly dispersed.

Advice

Avoid all protests to mitigate associated disruptions. Abide by all official directives.
