South Africa: King Misuzulu's coronation scheduled for Durban, Oct. 29

Event

The coronation of King Misuzulu Sinqobile KaZwelithini, leader of the Zulu people, will occur at Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban Oct. 29. The ceremony serves to ensure the king is recognized by the state. Attendees will include President Ramaphosa, members of cabinet, provincial government representatives, and members of the Zulu royal family. King Misuzulu's rivals, princes Simakade and Buzabazi, have maintained their rival claims to the throne as of Oct. 25.

Increased security as a result of the high-profile attendees is likely and could result in temporary road closures around the stadium. Protests in support or against the new king may occur. Security personnel will likely seek to contain or disperse any protests that materialize.

Context

Though it has no political power, the Zulu monarchy is a constitutional monarchy recognized by the South African State.

After the late King Goodwill Zwelithini's passing, three of his sons, then-Prince Misuzulu, Prince Buzabazi and Prince Simakade, made claims to the throne. The royal family is split over their claims. President Ramaphosa recognized then-Prince Misuzulu as the legitimate heir in March 2022, and the court dismissed his brother's legal challenges. King Misuzulu was formally crowned on Aug. 20, but his rivals still dispute his coronation.
