Uruguay: Strike, protests planned in Montevideo, Oct. 4-7

Unionized teachers, students, have launched a strike, on Oct. 4, and plan to march Oct. 6, in Montevideo, Uruguay, to demand higher budgets.

University professors, affiliated with the Professors Association of the University of the Republic (Asociacion de Docentes de la Universidad de la Republica, ADUR), and high school teachers affiliated with the Teachers Association of High School Education of Montevideo (Asociacion de Docentes de Educacion Secundaria, ADES Montevideo), have launched a strike in Montevideo Oct. 4, to demand higher budget for higher education, and a halt to a government's education reform plan. The unionized activists intend to remain on strike until Oct. 7. Student associations are supporting the strike.

Activists intend to march in Montevideo Oct. 6. They will gather at the Explanada of the University of the Republic (UDELAR), starting at 18:00, and from there, march to the Legislative Palace in the city's downtown.

Thousands are likely to participate in the demonstrations, which is likely to cause transport disruptions. Heightened security is likely near government offices. Other protests are likely throughout the duration of the strike, especially near the UDELAR and high school buildings.

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach your destination if operating in Montevideo, Oct. 4-7, as unannounced protests are possible. Strictly heed the instructions of authorities if you encounter a demonstration.
