Unionized education workers plan to hold a nationwide strike in Uruguay and protest in Montevideo Oct. 26-27.
Event
Unionized education workers plan to strike and hold several protests in Uruguay Oct. 26-27 to demand higher investment in public education and more participation of teachers in education reforms being proposed by the national government.
Members of several unions, including the Coordinator of Teaching Unions of Uruguay (Coordinadora de Sindicatos de la Ensenanza de Uruguay, CSEU), intend to hold a 24-hour nationwide strike beginning Oct. 26 and rally in Montevideo. Activists plan to gather outside the Explanada of the University of the Republic, along Avenida 18 de Julio, at 10:00.
Additionally, members of the Association of Teachers of Secondary Education (Asociacion de Docentes de Educacion Secundaria, ADES) plan to hold a 48-hour strike nationwide Oct. 26-27 and are likely to protest in Montevideo beginning 18:00 Oct. 27, at the Plaza 1ro de Mayo, located in front of the Legislative Palace.
Transport and business disruptions are almost certain to occur, especially near the protest sites. Heightened security around government offices is also likely.
Advice
Avoid all protests as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach your destination if operating in downtown Montevideo Oct 26-27.
