Activists to stage shutdown strike, protests in parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, Dec. 28. Increased security, disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Activists affiliated with the Anjuman-e-Tajran (Traders' Association) will hold a shutdown strike and protests in parts of Gilgit-Baltistan Dec. 28 to denounce the ongoing wheat and power supply disruptions, and the government's tax policies. As a part of their action, participants will reportedly stage a shutdown strike throughout Baltistan and a demonstration at Yadgar Chowk in Gilgit beginning 14:00. Activists also plan to disrupt traffic along undisclosed roadways.

While organizers have not yet revealed additional details, strike-related gatherings are likely, especially near prominent government buildings, public squares, and major thoroughfares. Participation will probably vary by location, although the turnout will likely remain low to moderate. Organizers may also protest in Islamabad.

Authorities will likely increase security near potential gathering sites and may attempt to disperse protesters. Clashes between police and demonstrators cannot be ruled out. Localized transport and business disruptions will almost certainly occur in the event of a higher turnout. While it remains unclear if activists will attempt to force offices and retail spaces to close during the action, business owners may opt to suspend their operations as a precaution.

Gilgit-Baltistan is located approximately 213 km (132 miles) northeast of Muzaffarabad.

Advice

Avoid any protests due to possible clashes. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure non-governmental building. Allow additional time to reach destinations near gathering locations. Confirm transport schedules and business appointments in advance. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
