Germany: Climate activists to march through Nuremberg, starting 16:00 Jan. 20

Climate activists to march through Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany, from 16:00 Jan. 20; localized disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Climate activists affiliated with the Nuremberg branch of Fridays for Future plan to march through Nuremberg, Bavaria, on Jan. 19. Participants will gather at the Aufseßplatz from 16:00 before marching towards Kaiserstraße. The purpose of the action is to denounce plans to expand a coal mine in the area and prevent the demolition of Lutzerath village. It is unclear how many participants the gathering will draw; however, previous demonstrations have attracted hundreds of demonstrators.

Protesters could attempt to disrupt transport and commercial activity during the event; heightened security measures are also likely and may prompt localized traffic disruptions. Low-level confrontations between police and protesters can not be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid the march as a routine security precaution. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Allow additional time to reach destinations in downtown Nuremberg on Jan. 20.
