Warning

Event

The Labour Party and Federation of Indonesian Metal Worker Unions (FSPMI) has called for demonstrations in cities nationwide Feb. 6 to oppose a presidential decree on the Omnibus Law on Job Creation. In Jakarta, protesters will gather at the House of Representatives (DPR). Organizers say demonstrations will also occur in several cities including Ambon, Banda Aceh, Banten, Bandung, Banjarmasin, Batam, Bengkulu, Kupang, Makassar, Medan, Pekanbaru, Semarang, Surabaya, and Ternate. Likely action sites include government buildings like governor offices and provincial, regency, or city councils, as well as prominent roadways and monuments. The party claims tens of thousands of people will participate in the demonstrations; the largest turnouts are likely in Jakarta and other major cities.

Authorities will probably increase security near protest sites, especially in Jakarta, Feb. 6. Localized traffic and business disruptions are likely, as workers may occupy roads. Clashes are possible, especially if authorities forcibly disperse demonstrators. Officials may use tear gas and water cannons to break up unruly crowds; authorities may also conduct mass arrests.

Advice

Avoid protest venues Feb. 6 due to possible clashes. If violence occurs nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter at a safe nongovernment building. Plan for localized transport and business disruptions nearby rally locations. Allow additional time to reach destinations near demonstration sites. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
