Myanmar: Pro-junta supporters plan to rally in Yangon Feb. 1 to mark anniversary of 2021 military coup
Pro-junta supporters plan to rally in Yangon Feb. 1 to mark anniversary of 2021 military coup. Tight security, disruptions likely.
Event
Pro-junta supporters plan to rally in Yangon Feb. 1 to mark the anniversary of the 2021 military coup. Participants will gather at Thamada Cinema before marching along Sule Pagoda Road to Maha Bandula Park in Kyauktada Township, where they will demonstrate 12:00-16:00. Hundreds to a few thousand people are expected to attend the event.
Authorities will likely increase security at protest locations, government buildings, and critical infrastructure. Localized transport and business disruptions are probable during any protest. Pro-democracy groups may stage counterprotests near any demonstrations. Possible demonstration sites include government buildings and prominent intersections, monuments, and parks. Clashes between pro-government activists and opposing groups of activists are possible. Government security forces could clash with protesters and may attempt to disperse gatherings forcibly using water cannons, tear gas, and rubber bullets. Officials may disrupt telecommunication networks in anticipation of or as a response to any large or disruptive gatherings.
Bombings and shootings by anti-junta activists targeting security forces and associated individuals are also possible at the event sites in Yangon. Additional security personnel will likely deploy near the scene of any bombing or shooting incident. Increased security measures, including vehicle inspections and checkpoints, are also likely following any explosion.
Advice
Avoid any protests as a precaution and exercise extreme caution in Yangon. Monitor local developments, especially protest plans, closely, as organizers may not announce details in advance. If a demonstration forms nearby, immediately leave the area, seek shelter in a safe, nongovernmental building, and stay away from windows. Do not record any military-related movements or demonstrations due to the risk of arbitrary detention. Shelter in place and avoid all unnecessary movements if operating in locations where demonstrations are taking place. Heed all official security instructions. Register and maintain contact with your diplomatic mission.
