North Korea reportedly conducted a nuclear strike test by launching four cruise missiles into the Sea of Japan (East Sea) Feb. 23. No damage or casualties were reported in connection with the test.

Context

The Feb. 23 launch comes after the US and South Korea held joint tabletop wargaming in Washington, DC, Feb. 20 to model possible scenarios involving a North Korean nuclear attack. Additional missile launches remain possible in the coming weeks.

Despite attempts at jumpstarting diplomacy, the geopolitical dynamics on the Korean Peninsula remain largely unaltered, as North Korea has previously stated that it will only give up its nuclear weapons in exchange for concrete moves to reduce perceived US threats against it.
