Increased security is likely in Duran over the coming days in response to an apparent assassination attempt against the town's mayor, Luis Chonillo, on May 15. The incident occurred when Chonillo's motorcade came under fire by unknown assailants near the Plaza Shiva Duran shopping center while en route to the local canton legislature. While the mayor survived, at least five people, including two of Chonillo's bodyguards, were injured in the attack. Authorities did not immediately announce any arrests or indicate possible motives for the attack. Nevertheless, organized crime groups have influence in the area and may have been involved.

Police are likely to increase patrols across Duran through at least the remainder of May 15. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely in the area of the attack as authorities continue their investigations.
