Ecuador: Increased security likely in Duran following May 15 assassination attempt against the city's mayor

Increased security is likely in Duran over the coming days in response to an apparent assassination attempt against the town's mayor, Luis Chonillo, on May 15. The incident occurred when Chonillo's motorcade came under fire by unknown assailants near the Plaza Shiva Duran shopping center while en route to the local canton legislature. While the mayor survived, at least five people, including two of Chonillo's bodyguards, were injured in the attack.
