Pakistan: Heightened security certain near court and police buildings in Islamabad May 10-11 due to high-profile investigations

Tight security certain near court and police buildings in Islamabad, Pakistan, May 10-11 due to high-profile case. Clashes possible.

Warning

Event

Heightened security measures are certain near the Islamabad District and Sessions Court, as well as the Counter-Terrorism Department office May 10-11 for investigations involving Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and former Prime Minister Imran Khan. An in-person indictment hearing will occur at the court premises May 10, while authorities have summoned Khan to the CTD office 14:00 May 10 and 11. Officials typically impose rules under Section 144 during similar events; such as banning unauthorized public gatherings of more than four people, the carrying and use of firearms in public, among others. PTI supporters are likely to defy any such restrictions to hold solidarity rallies during Khan's appearances, especially on May 10. Violence may quickly break out, mainly if police attempt to prevent PTI supporters from gathering.

Traffic restrictions, including road closures and diversions are likely in the vicinity of the affected buildings, sensitive areas like the Red Zone, as well as entry points to Islamabad. Additional measures, such as vehicular and pedestrian checks, are possible. Activists may hold violent and disruptive protests if Khan receives unfavorable court orders; popular protest venues include public parks, government buildings like the parliament, and major roadways. Clashes and/or tight security measures may prompt further localized transport and/or business disruptions.

Advice

Avoid any protests or navigating protester roadblocks due to possible violence. Exercise caution if operating in or near any court premises in Islamabad. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Plan for possible localized business and transport disruptions. Carry proper identification documents to present at security checks. Monitor trusted local media for protest plans, as organizers may not announce them in advance. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
