Pakistan: Increased security and traffic restrictions underway at Lahore's Zaman Park as of the evening of May 17
Enhanced security reported at Zaman Park in Lahore, Pakistan as of the evening of May 17. Protests likely; violence possible.
Event
Authorities are increasing security near the residence of Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Imran Khan's residence at Lahore's Zaman Park as of the evening of May 17. The move follows a 24-hour ultimatum to the PTI by Punjab Province's caretaker information minister Aamir Mir to hand over at least 30 suspects allegedly involved in attacking the Corps Commander House in Lahore during nationwide protests May 9. The minister claims the suspects are in Khan's residence. PTI supporters are likely to gather in the hundreds and confront any security personnel attempting to enter the premises.
Violence could quickly erupt, prompting additional security restrictions at short notice. Security forces have used force - including batons, tear gas, and water cannons - to disperse previous demonstrations. Armed clashes between PTI activists and police cannot be ruled out. Officials may suspend mobile internet services to prevent or control violence.
Localized transport disruptions are reportedly underway, with closures affecting access roads to Khan's residence. Increased congestion is also likely as PTI supporters reach the venue for any planned protests; demonstrators may impose roadblocks to prevent entry of police. Officials have earlier suspended power supply in the vicinity during earlier protests; similar measures may recur. Additional demonstrations are possible in other popular gathering spots like monuments and public squares if police use force, conduct mass arrests, or forcibly enter the building. Local businesses and schools may close in case of significant and/or widespread violence.
Advice
Avoid the vicinity of Zaman Park until security presence abates. Do not navigate roadblocks, or attend protests due to the risk of violence. If clashes break out nearby, immediately depart the area for a secure, nongovernmental building. Allow additional travel time in Lahore through at least May 18. Plan for localized disruptions. Monitor trusted local media for updates on protest plans, as organizers may not announce them in advance. Heed all official traffic and security advisories.
