US: Unionized teachers plan to hold a strike in Oakland, California, starting May 4

Unionized teachers and other education workers affiliated with the Oakland Education Association (OEA) plan to hold a citywide strike in Oakland, California, starting May 4. Activists are demanding an increase in salaries as well as improved conditions in some schools.

Protests associated with the strike are likely, especially outside the headquarters of the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) and outside public schools in the district. Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the protests. OEA leaders continue to negotiate with OUSD representatives, and the strike could be canceled if an agreement is reached.
