Honduras: Curfew implemented in Choloma in response to a shooting, June 24
Curfew implemented in Choloma, Honduras, as of June 25 in response to a shooting on June 24 in the town's Victoria area which left 11 dead.
Event
Officials have implemented an overnight 21:00-04:00 curfew in Choloma, located immediately north of San Pedro Sula, in response to a mass shooting at a billiard hall in the town's Victoria area on June 24, which left at least 11 people dead. The curfew will run for 15 days. The identity of the attackers and the motive for the assault are unclear. In response to rising insecurity, the curfew will also be implemented in San Pedro Sula from July 4. Additional security, including checkpoints, will be established in the area.
Additional security patrols and raids are likely as authorities to seek to reduce the threat posed by organized crime groups and reestablish order. Security measures are likely to result in ground travel and business operation disruptions. Further acts of violence will likely trigger additional measures or extensions of current regulations.
Context
This is the latest measure to combat crime in the country. President Xiomara Castro previously declared a state of emergency in response to the activity of several large criminal organizations, particularly the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) and Barrio 18 (18th Street Gang, Calle 18, Mara 18, La 18) gangs. Further measures are likely in response to incidents and security assessments.
Advice
Exercise caution when operating in the country. Heed all official advisories. Travel during the day and with identification. Avoid travel during curfew hours and at night.
