Authorities responding to assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio in Quito, Ecuador, the evening of Aug. 9.
Event
Authorities are responding to the assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio near the auditorium of the Anderson school in Quito as of late Aug. 9. Villavicencio was leaving a campaign event and entering his car at approximately 18:10 when multiple armed individuals shot him repeatedly. Reports indicate that the incident injured at least six other individuals. Authorities have not yet publically identified the suspects, but the involvement of drug-trafficking organizations (DTO's) is possible, as he had reported receiving threats from an organized criminal group in late July. The first round of the presidential election is scheduled for Aug. 20.
A heightened security presence is likely in Quito over the coming hours as police investigate the scene and secure the area. Localized transit disruptions, including police checks, and business disruptions, are likely. Further violence cannot be ruled out. Demonstrations are possible.
Advice
Avoid the affected area until authorities give the all-clear. Heed the advice of security personnel. If violence occurs nearby, seek shelter in a secure, non-government building. Plan for likely travel delays in the affected area. Monitor local news sources for further information.
