Heightened security will likely continue following at least four vehicle explosions in Casacay and Bella India, El Oro Province, and Quito early Aug. 31. Reports indicate two vehicle bombs detonated in Quito - one near the intersection of Avenida 9 de Octubre and General Francisco Robles, and another on Avenida 12 de Octubre near Salesiana University - while one explosion occurred each in Casacay and Bella India. At least three grenade attacks also reportedly occurred in Quito. Officials believe the explosions were retaliation by criminal organizations against recent police operations and relocation of prison inmates. Authorities have made six arrests over the incidents. There have been no reports of casualties.

Localized business and transport disruptions are likely, particularly in Quito, as police investigate the bombings.

Bella India is approximately 107 km (66 miles) west-southwest of Cuenca; Casacay is around 82 km (51 miles) southwest of Cuenca.
