Informational

Event

Activists affiliated with the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (Confederacion de Nacionalidades Indigenas del Ecuador, CONAIE) are protesting outside the Electoral Disputes Tribunal in Quito on Aug. 30. The purpose of the action is to demand that Guillermo Churuchumbi be named the national coordinator of the Pachakutik Plurinational Unity Movement (Movimiento de Unidad Plurinacional Pachakutik).

Although the action has remained largely peaceful, heightened security and localized transport and business disruptions are likely into at least the early afternoon of Aug. 30. Low-level confrontations cannot be ruled out, especially if the authorities attempt to forcibly disperse protesters.

Advice

Avoid the protest as a precaution. Allow extra time to reach destinations in the vicinity of the Electoral Disputes Tribunal.
