Heightened security is likely to remain in place following reports of at least two vehicle explosions in Quito in the early hours of Aug. 31. Reports suggest that a vehicle explosion was reported at the intersection of Avenida 9 de Octubre and Calle Roble, followed by another vehicle explosion on Avenida 12 de Octubre, near Salesiana University. Social media reports suggest residents in the Floresta, La Mariscal, and La Carolina areas of the city have also reported hearing multiple explosions. Officials believe the explosions were retaliation attacks by criminal organizations and have made six arrests in connection with the explosions. No casualties have been reported.

Heightened security and localized disruptions are likely to continue near the affected areas in the coming hours.
