Germany: Unionized rail workers plan to conduct nationwide strikes, Jan. 9-12 /update 1

Unionized rail workers plan to strike across Germany Jan. 9-12. Widespread train disruptions possible.

Warning

Railway workers affiliated with the German Locomotive Drivers' Union (GDL) plan to strike nationwide from Jan. 9-12 to demand improved wages and reduced working hours. The strikes were originally planned to start from Jan. 8; however, negotiations continued through Jan. 7 and the starting date was delayed. Rail freight staff will strike from 18:00 Jan. 9 and passenger services staff will commence at 02:00 Jan. 10. The industrial action is scheduled to end at 18:00 Jan. 12.

Widespread rail transport disruptions are likely during the strike period. Vehicular transport disruptions are possible due to increased car usage. Protests are possible at transport hubs. Heightened security may accompany any protests that materialize. Disruptions to some services may continue in the hours following the end of the industrial action.

Reconfirm all rail travel. Consider taking alternative transport methods if booked to travel by train during the strike period. Allow additional time for vehicular transport. Avoid all areas that are subject to related protest activity. Heed instructions from authorities.

A previous GDL strike on Nov. 15-16 resulted in 20 percent of scheduled services operating. A further strike on Dec. 7-8 also caused significant network disruptions.
