India: Unionized transport workers to stage indefinite strike across Tamil Nadu State from Jan. 9

Unionized transport workers to launch indefinite strike in Tamil Nadu, India, from Jan. 9. Transport disruptions likely; protests possible.

Warning

Transport workers from several unions, including the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) and All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), plan to stage an indefinite strike across Tamil Nadu State from Jan. 9. The action is to demand several concessions from the state, including wage revisions and release of pending Dearness Allowance to employees. Organizers may call off the action at short notice if negotiations with officials succeed.

While the work stoppage will likely receive high participation, its impact on public bus services will probably be limited. State authorities have announced the deployment of over 19,000 special state-affiliated buses across the state between Jan. 12-18 to alleviate disruptions caused by the strike ahead of Pongal celebrations Jan. 15. Increased demand for alternative transport, such as private-hire vehicles, is likely, mainly in downtown areas.

Workers may hold related protests until officials agree to their demands. Associated demonstrations are possible at or near public squares, government buildings like town halls, transport hubs, and vehicle operator offices. Strike supporters may block roads with vehicles or march on the streets. Any gatherings that materialize may attract security deployment and exacerbate localized traffic disruptions. Localized business disruptions are possible until the labor action concludes. While the events are likely to pass peacefully, minor skirmishes may occur if police attempt to forcibly disperse unruly crowds.

Confirm bus transport schedules if operating in Tamil Nadu State. If necessary, seek alternative means of transport and make advance bookings. Exercise caution around protests and allow for additional travel time. Monitor trusted local media for updates on strike and protest details, as organizers may not announce them in advance. Heed all security and traffic advisories.
