Students and teachers stage protests and block several roads in Guerrero State, Mexico, Jan. 15; heightened security, clashes reported.

Warning

Students and teachers affiliated with the Intercultural University of the Peoples of the State of Guerrero (Universidad Intercultural de los Pueblos del Estado de Guerrero, UNIPEG) have organized protests in several areas across the state on Jan. 15, blocking roads. The purpose of the demonstrations is to demand that state authorities officially recognize the school. Demonstrators have reportedly blocked the following routes, among others:

  • Mexico-Acapulco federal highway in Paso Limonero

  • Zihuatenejo-Lazaro Cardenas federal highway in La Union de Isidoro Montes de Oca Municipality

  • Acapulco-Zihuatanejo federal highway in Coyuca de Benitez and near Tetitlan

  • Miguel Aleman bridge in Coyuca de Catalan

  • Chilpancingo-Tlapa de Comonfort federal highway near Tlapa de Comonfort

Additional protests and accompanying roadblocks may materialize on short notice.

A heightened security presence and clashes, including between demonstrators and frustrated motorists, have been reported at some protest sites. Further clashes are possible, especially if police attempt to forcibly disperse protesters. Lingering traffic disruptions will likely impact areas that are subject to protest activity. Localized business disruptions cannot be ruled out.

Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent protest activity and any related disruptions. If violence breaks out in your area, immediately depart the vicinity and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
