A strong magnitude-6.7 earthquake occurred in the Philippine Sea near southern Mindanao at around 04:48 on Jan. 9. The epicenter was around 100 km (60 miles) southeast of Sarangani, Philippines. Damage and casualties are possible in areas close to the epicenter. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has stated that there is no tsunami threat due to the earthquake.
