Authorities likely to maintain tight security after police chase results in four deaths in Rio de Janeiro's South Zone, Brazil, May 22.

Officials will likely maintain tight security in the Jardim Botanico area of Rio de Janeiro’s South Zone after a police chase resulted in four fatalities early May 22. The casualties include two Expressway Police Battalion (Batalhao e Policiamento em Vias Expressas, BPVE) officers who were involved in a traffic incident in the area. It remains unclear if the other two fatalities were suspects. Authorities have closed Rua Jardim Botanico between the Saint Hilaire Viaduct and Professor Saldanha Road. Traffic diversions are in place.

Heightened security and disruptions to business and traffic will likely continue in the affected area while officials investigate the incident early May 22.

Strictly heed instructions from authorities. Avoid traveling to or through the affected areas of Rio de Janeiro. If within or near the affected areas, remain in accommodations until police give the all-clear.
