Officials will likely maintain security measures in Balasore, Odisha State, India, in the coming days as of June 21. Plan for disruptions.

Warning

As of June 21, heightened security is likely to remain in place in Balasore, Odisha State, in the coming days. Communal clashes on June 17 over the slaughtering of cows left a number of people injured. Officials implemented Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedures in response to the unrest; at least 54 people have been arrested. Under Section 144, public gatherings of more than five people, loudspeakers, and microphones are prohibited. Weapons carrying and the possession and use of fireworks are also banned. Authorities have implemented a curfew that will remain until midnight on June 21. Officials will likely review the implementation of the curfew late June 21. Internet restrictions are in place across Balasore through at least 10:00 June 22.

Officials could expand security measures to other surrounding areas as a precaution or if tensions persist. Associated transport disruptions are likely. Protests by the local community against the implementation of Section 144 are possible. Clashes between police, demonstrators, and rival communities cannot be ruled out. Localized business disruptions are possible.

Consider avoiding Balasore until the restrictions are lifted. Strictly heed the instructions of local authorities. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by law enforcement personnel. Confirm road status before traveling to locations under curfew or movement restrictions. If any violence erupts nearby, depart the area immediately.
