DRC: Activists plan commemorative gatherings nationwide Aug. 2

Activists to gather for commemorative events across DRC on Aug. 2.

Informational

Several civil society groups will commemorate Genocost nationwide on Aug. 2. In Kinshasa, participants will gather at the Place des Evolues from 16:30. Similar gatherings will likely take place across the country, including in Kisangani, where President Felix Tshisekedi is due to attend, as well as Beni, Goma, and Kikwit, among others.

Increased security and localized road disruptions are likely near all protest sites. Although violence is not likely, police may quickly resort to force to disperse participants if they are overly disruptive.

Plan for potential localized transport disruptions and allow additional travel time. Heed all official security and transport advisories.

Genocost is an initiative to commemorate Congolese killed in various conflicts across the country, with Aug. 2 corresponding to the beginning of the second Congo War (1998-2003).
