Severe weather causes flight disruptions at airports in New York metropolitan area, US, July 14; lingering delays and cancellations likely.

Warning

Flight disruptions, including delays and cancellations, will likely affect airports in the New York metropolitan area into at least early July 15 due to severe thunderstorms impacting the region. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued ground delay programs at Newark International (EWR) and John F. Kennedy International (JFK) airports which are in effect until at least 23:59 July 14, with a similar directive in place at LaGuardia Airport (LGA) until 22:59 July 14. The FAA may modify or rescind the ground delay programs on short notice. As of the afternoon of July 14, flight delays at LGA are averaging 62 minutes, with an average of 129 minutes at JFK and EWR.

The FAA may issue additional weather-related ground delay programs and/or ground stops for airports in the New York metropolitan area over the coming hours. Residual disruptions are possible even after weather conditions improve as airlines work to clear passenger backlogs.

Confirm flight reservations if scheduled to travel via JFK, LGA, EWR, or another airport in the New York metropolitan area; do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Consider making alternative arrangements for time-sensitive travel if necessary.
