Unidentified assailants kidnapped at least 20 people in Otukpo, Benue State, at around 17:30 Aug. 15. The victims, mostly medical and dental students, were en route to an annual convention in Enugu when a group of gunmen ambushed their vehicle. There has as yet been no report of any ransom demand; authorities are investigating the incident.
Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security presence in the area over the coming days and conduct operations to apprehend the kidnappers and rescue the abductees. Security forces may establish roadblocks and checkpoints, as well as conduct vehicle and pedestrian searches. Armed clashes between kidnappers and security forces cannot be ruled out.
